Design and Technology web site

 

If you are a studying D&T you will know that it is hard going at times. We have produced resource pages to try to make the subject a little easier to understand. To help explain the more difficult parts we have included as many pictures as possible. 

Those resource pages that contain a large number of images may take a while to download - please be patient.

Flying-Pig - Unusual name for a site about paper engineering.
How Stuff Works - This site is full of explanations about how things work - not all D&T related but interesting nevertheless.

AQA Design and Technology - The AQA examinations board site visit here to print off past papers and Examiners reports.
BBC GCSE Bitesize Revision - Useful revision tips and information on D&T subject areas.

Industrial Designers Society of America - Some useful stuff on materials processing, particularly Injection Moulding and the design history of the chair

Design Insite - A Danish site (in english) providing a designer's guide to manufacturing. Manufacturing processes & materials are described as well as the products where they are used. Purpose is to inspire designers to consider materials and processes which are new or unknown to them. Useful for basic info.

Material Selection and processing - A resource to aid good practice in the selection of materials for product design. It has information on materials, properties, processes, product design and more.

The British plastics Federation - Excellent site for plastics and plastics processing. Straightforward descriptions of common polymers, together with mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and a case study application for each material. Processing database contains useful descriptions, together with really dinky animations showing the operation of each process!

Materials by Design - site, produced by Cornell university, to introduce high school and undergraduate university students to advanced engineered materials and their impact on our everyday lives.

Machine Design.com - An annoyingly slow site but full of information - Try Technology Zones

Teachers Workshop - A site prepared by the University of Illinous Materials Science and Technology Department. Contains modules of work on Metals, Ceramics, Polymers, Semiconductors, Concrete and Energy.

Association of Plastics Manufacturers in Europe - Interesting site containing lot's of information on Plastics.

Component Failure Museum - Part of the Open University site - looking at examples of Material and component Failure.

The Anatomy Of Wood - This site has articles about the structure, density and characterisation of wood. Gives some insights into its strength and other physical properties. Another section is on plant fibre textiles that are used in paper, non-woven and wovens manufacture.

Polymers - Virtual Textbook  - Some excellent but very detailed stuff on polymers

Britannica.com - Britannica.com is a free knowledge and learning center it includes the complete, updated Encyclopędia Britannica,

Encarta - Microsoft Encarta On-Line is a free encyclopędia with a reference area and study centre
