Database a program which links together information so that it can be easily searched
Data Collection the collection of information that is useful in understanding a design brief and developing design ideas. Questionnaires are often used to collect data from potential users.
Decoration the application of colour, texture and pattern to a surface to improve its appearance
Deciduous a broad leafed tree that looses its leaves in winter

Design Brief

a short statement about what is needed, who it is for, and any constraints

Design Process the stages you go through to complete a design proposal
Designer a person who devises solutions to design problems
Design Criteria a list describing the standards that a design must meet if it is to be successful
Design Proposal a response to a design brief, a description of the product to be made in sufficient detail that the designer and/or the client can decide whether it is worth developing the proposal further
D.C.

abbreviation for direct current

Difference test a test to find out if people can tell the difference between slightly different food products
Digital signal a signal which has only two states: on and off
Dimension measurement shown on a drawing
Diode

A diode will allow electrical current to flow in one direction only. They are solid state devices and typically need more than 0.6 volts to operate. In a normal diode, current flows from the positive anode to the negative cathode. There are several special types including LEDs, (light emitting diodes) photodiodes and zener diodes.

Direct Current

electric current which is always either +ve or -ve

Disassemble to look closely at a product or to take it apart carefully, to identify how it works, what is is made from, how it was manufactured etc.
DMA design and make assignment
DMT design and make task
Double Acting Cylinder a pneumatic component where air pushes a piston forwards and backwards
DPDT double pole double throw (on a switch or relay)

DPST double pole single throw (on a switch or relay)

Draft angle an angled surface all around a pattern to help release it from a vacuum form or sand casting mould
Drill a tool used for making small round holes in wood, plastic and metal

Drill Bit the cutting tool used in a drill. It is held in the chuck and cuts into the material as it rotates

Drill Stand a device for holding a drill so that it is easy to use and it drills perpendicularly
Drive belt rubber plastic or leather bands used to transmit motion between pulley wheels
Ductile

the property of a material to be drawn into a longer thinner cross-section without breaking.
