P Type positive type semiconductor (too few electrons)
Packaging the wrapping around products that is used to protect the product from damage, to keep the product clean, to extend shelf life, to promote the product and to provide information about the product
Parallel (1) An arrangement of terminals where poles of like polarity are connected together
PCB printed circuit board
Permanent Joint a joining process in which the joining is permanent and not easily reversed e.g. glueing or welding
Perspective Drawing a method of two dimensional drawing that gives the illusion of depth
PIC peripheral interface controller: a programmable computer on a single chip, a type of microcontroller
Pictograms simplified drawings of activities such as swimming etc
Pictorial Drawing a realistic rendered drawing of an object
Piezoelectric Crystal a material that can change shape when a voltage is applied and can produce a voltage if its shape is changed
Pilot Hole a small hole used to guide a larger drill to the correct position
Plane a device used to reduce the thickness of wood
Planishing hammering the surface of sheet metal to smooth and work harden it
Plastic Memory the way thermoplastics try to return to their original shape when re-heated
Plywood a strong manufactured board made from thin layers of wood running at 900
Pneumatics a system of valves and cylinders driven by compressed air
Polymer a molecule formed when monomers are joined together
Polystyrene Foam a thermoplastic material used for modelling and packaging
Port where air enters and leaves a pneumatic component
Positive electrode

the conductor connected to the more positive voltage in a circuit.

Potentiometer a variable resistor
Precious metal rare metals such as gold, silver and platinum
Presentation Drawing coloured, rendered drawings showing a product as realistically as possible
Preserve to keep fruit and vegetables from spoiling
Preset a small variable resistor usually mounted on a PCB and adjusted by a screwdriver

Primary research

research which you collect

Prioritize put things in order of importance
Product a manufactured item usually bought by a consumer
Product Evaluation  - Looking at existing products to see how they are made. What materials have been used etc.
Product Image the characteristics of a product as perceived by the consumer e.g. hi tech, low tech, eco friendly, traditional, modern, value for money etc
Properties the characteristics of a material or ingredient
Proposals the things you intend to do
Protein ingredient in certain foods which builds muscle
Prototype a one-off representation of a design that shows how it works, what it looks like and how it is used so that it can be fully evaluated.
PTC positive temperature coefficient
Pulley

a circular disc or wheel used with a belt that grips onto it. There is usually a V-shaped groove cut into the circumference of the pulley to help the belt grip.

Glossary of D&T terms: P

Pulse width the length of time a signal is on or off
Pulses generic term for beans, peas and lentils
Push fit a tight fit that holds two parts together. You can use a push fit to join a wheel to an axle so that as the wheel turns the axle turns too.

PVA

poly vinyl acetate

PVC Poly vinyl chloride
