Salting a method of preservation involving packing food in layers of salt
Sand paper

an abrasive paper used to smooth the rough edges of freshly sawn wood

Sanding Block a piece of cork or wood or plastic which glass or sandpaper can be wrapped around when sanding.

Scale of Production the size of a production run, i.e. one-off, batch, mass and continuous
Scale the size of a model compared to the real thing
Scissors a hand tool that is used to cut paper, thin card and fabric
Seam used to join pieces of fabric together
Seasoning (1) reducing the moisture content of newly felled timber before use
Seasoning (2) adding salt, pepper and other ingredients to improve the flavour of food
Secondary research

research collected and published by others

Sectional view a cutaway view showing internal details
Semiconductor a silicon based material or electronic component that can be made to act like a conductor or an insulator.
Sensor a component such as an LDR that can detect changes in its surroundings e.g. a light sensor can detect changes in brightness, a heat sensor can detect changes in temperature.
Series arrangement of terminals, so that components are placed end to end with unlike poles connected together
Shaft

a rod that rotates and normally has pulleys, sprockets or gear wheels attached to it.

Shear a force which acts to rip or tear a material
Sheet Material  a form of material where the length and width are much greater than the thickness e.g. paper, card, fabric, corrugated plastic
Shell Structure a structure composed of  a single piece of sheet material formed to provide strength and rigidity
Signal a voltage produced by a sensor or some other component
Simulate use a computer to try something out before actually building it
Single Acting Cylinder a pneumatic cylinder which uses air pressure to push a piston out and a spring to return it
Sketching drawing freehand
Sliding Fit joining two parts together loosely so that they can move independently of each other. You can use a sliding fit to join a wheel to a fixed axle.
SMA shape memory alloy: a type of smart material which remembers its original shape when heated with an electric current
Smart Materials new materials with unusual characteristics and properties
Snail Cam a snail shell shaped cam
Soft jaws plastic jaws which fit in a vice to prevent damage to the object being held
Softwood wood from an evergreen tree which keeps it leaves in winter
Solvents a chemical which dissolves a material
SPDT single pole double throw
Specialist an expert in a specific area
Specification a detailed description of what the product has to do; look like; and be made from
Spreadsheet a computer program that allows data to be manipulated
Sprockets

a thin wheel that has tiny teeth around its edge, normally used with a chain to transmit rotary motion, as on a bicycle.

SPST single pole single throw
Stability resistance to changes in shape or movement
Stain Resistance fabric that is chemically protected against staining
Star Chart a visual representation of the attributes of a product. It consists of several axes each representing a particular attribute that can be given a score. Joining the score points often creates a shape like a star, hence the name.
Static load a constant applied force
Stencil Cutter a CAM plotter which can cut thin plastic sheet or card
Sterile a complete absence of micro-organisms
Stiffness a material property: A stiff material is difficult to stretch or bend
Stock Sizes the standard sizes of material stocked by suppliers
Strength a material property: a strong material can resist the forces of compression, tension, torsion or shear without breaking
Stroke the length of movement of a pneumatic cylinder
Structure a framework or shell that supports a load and/or encloses a space.
Strut a rigid structural member used to resist compressive forces
Survey an investigation used to elicit opinions. Surveys usually rely on information from questionnaires.
Switch a component that controls the flow of electricity by either turning it on or off or by changing the path along which it flows
Symbols simplified drawings used to represent things
Synthetic a manufactured material: not natural

System

a group of components which work together to make something happen
