On this page you will find examples of student's work which we consider to be characteristic of the level of performance outlined in the attainment target for design and technology. In deciding on a student's level of performance we try to match the student's designing and making to the description which 'best fits' the work submitted for assessment.

EXAMPLES OF
DESIGNING AND MAKING

Indicators for level 3 activity

Designing - The student will have:

Described and shown some understanding of the task;
Used some annotation or labelling to clarify design features;
Provided evidence of basic drawing and sketching skills but with little constructional detail;
Provided little if any evidence of independent research;
Produced a series of unrelated ideas with little or no development;
Provided little evidence of forward planning;

Making - The student will have:

Made a simple list of materials or ingredients without sizes or quantities;
Provided limited evidence of a simple work plan;
Demonstrated limited skill and accuracy;
Incorrectly sequenced making activities leading to errors, a large degree of dependence on teacher;
Worked safely and hygienically with supervision;
Produced an outcome which may not match the original intention, possibly incomplete or poorly finished;
Produced a largely summative and descriptive evaluation.

Indicators for level 4 activity

Designing - The student will have:
Shown understanding of the task and described key features;
Used annotation or labelling to clarify design features;
Produced drawings, showing some constructional detail using limited sketching and rendering skills;
Carried out some independent research;
Produced more than one related idea with evidence of development;
Shown awareness of potential improvements;

Making
- The student will have:
Made a list of materials or ingredients, tools and equipment with some sizes or quantities;
Provided evidence of a step by step work plan;
More attention to hygiene and health and safety;
Demonstrated some skill and accuracy, more careful weighing and measuring;
Less dependence on teacher, evidence of independent work;
Produced better quality work which more closely matches the original intention, largely complete and reasonably finished;
Produced a reasoned evaluation which indicates problems encountered or changes made.

Indicators for level 5 activity

Designing - The student will have:
Shown a clear understanding of the task and analysed key features;
Written a basic specification;
Used annotation or labeling to clarify design details, justify choices and analyse existing solutions;
Produced more accurate drawings, showing constructional detail using a range of sketching and rendering skills;
Carried out some independent research and be able to suggest what materials and ingredients are needed;
Produced a variety of ideas which satisfy the specification and brief, with evidence of selection, modification or development;
Give reasons for changes made and make use of the views of others;

Making - The student will have:

Made a detailed list of materials or ingredients, tools and equipment with more accurate sizes or quantities;
Provided evidence of a step by step work plan, in the correct sequence for making;
Demonstrated safe and controlled working practices;
Demonstrated some skill and accuracy, more careful weighing and measuring;
Less dependence on teacher, evidence of independent work;
Produced an acceptable product which matches the original intention, is complete and finished, but which may still have some innacuracies;
Produced a reasoned evaluation which indicates some formative as well as summative comments, which suggest improvements to their product prior to or during making.

Indicators for level 6 activity

Designing - The student will have:

analyzed the brief and task to identify key issues;

Carried out research independently which is targeted at these key issues;
Used this research to develop detailed ideas and/or specifications;
Produced a range of possible ideas using more formal and more detailed drawings with some indication of sizes;
Provided clear selection and justification for ideas and information;

Making - The student will have:

Produced step by step planning giving some details;
Made more skilful use of a range of techniques;
Carried out, and organized work  largely independently;
Produced a largely functional product

Indicators for level 7 activity

Designing - The student will have:

Shown a clear analysis and understanding of task;

Produced a specification which is clear and contains some technical details;
Produced purposeful research and experimentation leading to effective and detailed planning;
Produced a range of possible ideas using more formal and more detailed drawings with detailed annotation and dimensions;
Understood the importance of material/ingredient choice;
Shown clear development from initial ideas to final solution
Made and justified modifications to original idea

Making - The student will have:

Drafted a detailed production plan which takes some account of timescales;
Demonstrated skilful use of a range of techniques;
Selected and handled materials and ingredients precisely and safely;
Produced a fully functional product with evidence of precision and quality of finish;
Measured and evaluated the outcome against specified criteria.

This student was able to use taught techniques and apply knowledge gained in previous projects to work largely independently. He was able to conduct independent research, showed initiative and a degree of flair.

His ideas show evidence of detailed and fairly rigorous planning with dimensioning and construction details clearly considered;

He used on-going evaluation/testing throughout his project and made modifications where necessary;

He demonstrated a good understanding of material characteristics and manufacturing techniques;

Although limited by prior experience he used tools and equipment with skill;

He was well motivated and and reasonably confident and had the necessary persistence to achieve a precise, accurate and quality finished product.
