KS3 Exemplar Work

Years seven, eight and nine in any secondary school bring students into contact with specialist teachers of Design and Technology for possibly the first time in their school careers. They have access to a wider range of equipment and are shown how to structure their designing by recording ideas in a design folio. The design folio shows evidence of the students exploration of ideas, concepts and decision making.

Throughout key stage three students are taught techniques for exploring and developing ideas including - sketching and rendering, annotated drawings, 3D mock ups and computer simulation. Sometimes the students work on their own, sometimes in pairs and on occasions as a member of a team. They will use aspects of mathematics, science and art.

As they progress through key stage three students continue to develop D&T capability by combining designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding. They begin to study existing products to see how others have solved similar problems.

In each of the three years three types of activity are used to develop D&T capability. These are:

Focused practical tasks designed to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding outlined in the PoS for Technology.

Design and Make tasks designed to integrate Designing and Making skills with the knowledge, skills and understanding outlined above.

Product Analysis tasks designed to enable pupils to investigate a range of familiar products so that they develop an understanding of real life applications of the knowledge, skills and understanding learnt in school.

Objective assessment is provided by end of module tests (where applicable) as well as an end of year exam. These coupled with the formative assessment of homework assignments; coursework tasks and self assessment via review sheets form the basis of assessment for each year group.

Work in Years 7 and 8 will consist mainly of focused tasks built into a tightly constrained design and make tasks intended to introduce students to the core concepts which underpin the knowledge and understanding outlined in the programme of study for Design and Technology. In Year 9 the students are asked to engage in a series of individual design and make projects which are used as the basis for teacher assessment at the end of this key stage.

Each design and make task in years 7and 8 lasts approx 12 weeks and where possible is presented in a similar format. Typically students design and make simple electronic devices introducing work in systems and control. They build and test structures; design and make, wind chimes, games and moving toys and design and manufacture textiles and food products.

In year nine the projects vary in length and complexity but are based on the non-statutory assignments provided by the DfEE.
